The Wearing of Jewelry

The Wearing of Jewelry
Why We Wear Jewelry?

Jewelry - everyone knows what it is, but where did it come from and why do we wear it?

The making and wearing of jewelry can be traced back to almost all ancient civilizations and scientists are beginning to discover jewelry like articles that even belonged to prehistoric civilizations. Beads, made from pieces of mollusk shells with holes perforated in them, have been found in South Africa that are thought to be 100,000 years old.

The earliest jewelry was created from natural materials. Animal teeth, small rocks/stones, shells, and even bones were the materials used for the very first pieces of jewelry. It wasn't until later more advanced civilizations came along that precious metals and stones began to be used to make jewelry.

The earliest jewelry served in several capacities. At first it was probably created to be functional – something used to hold or clip pieces of clothing together. Early jewelry was also used superstitiously. Those who wore it thought that the pieces had the power to keep evil spirits away or heal illnesses. Some of the jewelry we wear today is considered to be from ancient beliefs. The Evil Eye Jewelry is commonly worn to ward off the evil or envy, and to protect the person from negative energy by reflecting these looks.

Religious Jewelry is another popular form of simple materials that transformed to precious metals and gemstones in today's society. Christian Cross and the Star of David are the most popular and believed to exist for thousands of years. In western civilization salves used to be made to wear earrings to "brand" them for trade or sale. However this quickly became unpopular because of cultural clash of women wearing earring jewelry.

Another function of early jewelry was a symbol of wealth and status. This function of jewelry is one that has carried on through the ages. Even today, people look at jewelry as a status symbol. Jewelry made of platinum, gold, silver and precious gems, particularly diamonds, indicate that the wearer has wealth and prosperity.

Jewelry as simply an adornment is one of its later functions. The wearing of jewelry to make someone look more attractive or to complement clothing may not have been one of jewelries earliest purposes, but quickly became one of jewelries most prevalent purposes. Today, at least in most western cultures, this is jewelries main function, although it still serves as a symbol of wealth and status. It's not unusual, especially for females, to buy certain pieces of jewelry to specifically match one item of clothing.

Who wears jewelry? Just about everyone from infants to the elderly. It's not unusual to see a baby girl's ears pierced so she can wear small colored studs, perhaps the color of her birthstone. Older children wear necklaces, rings and bracelets, although usually not expensive pieces.

Teens and adults are usually the wearers of both costume and fine jewelry. Costume jewelry is made from inexpensive materials and is simply for adornment. Jewelry made from fine metals, such as silver jewelry, gold jewelry, platinum jewelry, as well as precious stones and gems such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pearls are considered fine jewelry.

Historians can tell a lot about a civilization by studying the types of jewelry that its people valued. It remains to be seen what future historians will conclude about our current civilization based on the jewelry that we prize today.
